‘Pint for a Pint’ Blood Drive in Tuckerton on June 14

Jun 06, 2018

The Tuckerton Red Men Tribe No. 61’s women’s auxiliary, the Degree of Pocahontas, is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive on Thursday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Red Men Lodge, located at 145 West Main Street (Route 9) in Tuckerton. The drive has a theme – “A Pint for a Pint.” Give a pint of blood and receive a pint of ice cream, sort of a tasty human oil change.

Pre-registration is not required but is strongly encouraged, considering walk-ins could be shut out from this popular annual event. Appointments can be made by visiting redcrossblood.org. You’re not online? Call 609-296-7923 and leave a message with your name, phone number and preferred time.

You are generally eligible to give whole blood if you haven’t donated within 56 days, are in good health and feeling well, are at least 16 years old in most states and weigh at least 110 pounds. Common disqualifiers are having symptoms of a cold or flu, having a temperature above 99.5 F, having recently received certain vaccinations (for example, you must wait four weeks after being immunized against German measles (Rubella), measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), chicken pox and shingles, or have recently traveled to or lived in a malaria-risk country. Visit redcross.org to learn about more disqualifiers.

The ladies of the Red Men actually had a couple of other options for a theme for this year’s drive. June 14 is Flag Day, so they could have gone with “Be a Star this Flag Day.” June 14 is also the World Health Organization’s World Blood Donor Day, so “We Are the World” also would have been appropriate. —R.M.
