Letter

Poem Critique

Sep 12, 2018

To the Editor:

I was surprised to see you printed misinformation in your Aug. 29 letters to the editor. A line in the “Stand in Line” poem was not based on fact. The writer stated that refugees with children arrived “with no regard for border rules,” when it’s been documented that many migrants did turn themselves in to U.S. Border Patrol at a designated spot, and even under these circumstances, fathers and mothers were still separated from their children last spring.

And now, even with parents back in their home countries, children as young as 5 years old are in centers as far away from the southern border as New York.

So for the writer to call these desperate folks “illegal fools,” despite their doing their best to follow the rules, is erroneous. I hope you will print letters that are factual in the future, and not lines in poems that promote misinformation and perhaps even complacency in responding to the plight of folks in very difficult situations.
