Poet Richard Morgan Releases Latest Work, My Lighthouse Key

Apr 04, 2018

Richard Morgan has published his sixth book of poetry, My Lighthouse Key, which also features watercolor illustrations by his wife, Pat Morgan. A Beach Haven resident, Morgan said most of the works are poems he composed within the past two years.

“They concern strangers and family, love and life, courage and loss,” he said. “My wife’s watercolors add a special dimension to the poems rarely found in poetry books.”

Morgan is also author of I Am Sea Glass, Sea Glass People, Sea Glass Soul, Hebrew Lessons and Sea Glass Windows. He also coordinates the Poets’ Studio, which meets on the first Thursday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Long Beach Island branch of the Ocean County Library in Surf City.

“For the new book, I take the opposite view of John Donne’s saying that ‘no man is an island,’” said the retired college business administrator. “I’m saying that every man is an island, and I want to share my island with the reader.”

He said the book contains 37 poems, including the title work, “My Lighthouse Key.” It is available through Amazon.com.

“I’ve got one poem called ‘Snowman,’” Morgan said. “The children are playing around him, and the snowman is frustrated because with a mouth made out of stones, he can’t talk. And with arms made of sticks, he can’t hug them. I also wrote one called ‘Turkey Talk’ which is from the turkey’s perspective on the Thanksgiving table.”

Morgan said he is planning to hold several readings from the new collection over the summer.

“I’m also working on having some Island stores carry the books as well as the local libraries,” he said.
