Letters

Radical Right Group

Feb 06, 2019

To the Editor:

This is in response to James Spickard’s “Broken Oaths” letter (1/30). Mr. Spickard mentions “the Freedom Index, a function of the John Birch Society, the foremost organization and authority dedicated to upholding the U.S. Constitution.”

Since fact checking is absolutely needed in this era of fake news and undermining of the truth through cognitive manipulation on all media, with its eloquent leader Mr. Trump, here are the Wikipedia facts about JBS:

The John Birch Society (JBS) is an advocacy group supporting anti-communism and limited government. It has been described as a radical right and far-right organization.

The society opposed the 1960s civil rights movement and claimed the movement had Communists in important positions.

The society opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, claiming it violated the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution and overstepped individual state’s rights to enact laws regarding civil rights.

If I were in Congress representing New Jersey, I would be proud to have a Freedom Index score as good as Booker’s or Menendez’s. And I am not surprised that MacArthur’s was so high, considering he voted in favor of the conservative tax bill last year that hurt most of his own constituency.
