Rainy Day Doings

Aug 23, 2017

To the Editor:

On a recent rainy day we needed to find something to do with the kids to keep them occupied. Three- and 5-year-old girls have no desire to sit in the house and play board games all day so we had to become adventurous in our ideas.

They had put their bathing suits on as soon as they climbed out of bed in anticipation of a fun day at the beach. Unfortunately, that was not in the game plan on this particular day. So if they were not able to go into the ferocious ocean, we had to find a way to bring the ocean to them in another fashion. The bathtub was filled, beach toys were gathered and into the tub they went. I figured we were killing two birds with one stone. They got to play in the water, so to speak, and get a bath at the same time. I wish it was always that easy.

After swimming in the virtual ocean came the shell painting for additions to our “shellabration garden.” Silly me, we should have done this before the “swimming” venture, but lesson learned for the next time. A little paint under the nails or in the hair never hurt anyone.

Next we needed to go shopping to find princess dresses and have a fashion show. What better place to go shopping for dress-up clothes but in my closet, which was demanding of a good purge? They each grabbed a big beach bag that I had sitting around and off we went to the pretend store to pick out some dresses, shoes and a must-have pocketbook to finish off their attire while they walked down the virtual runway to display their beauty and grace.

With all that said and done, there was still half the afternoon left needing to be occupied. We all hopped in the car and headed down to Fantasy Island. Unbeknownst to us, it was the same day as the craft fair, but that did not deter us from our mission. We ended up finding a parking spot and were able to enjoy the festivities with gusto. The trip proved successful as my husband/grandpop was able to score two of the animals from the ever-frustrating claw tank for his appreciative granddaughters. The sun began to peek out intermittently during this time, adding to the fun.

A rainy day at the beach is worth a sunny day in the city anytime, especially when you’re on LBI.
