ReClam Expanding

Apr 04, 2018

To the Editor:

With a new season starting soon for ReClam the Bay, I’m excited to share some upcoming ventures that we will be undertaking this year.

We are proud to announce that we will open our 11th upweller site in Island Beach State Park to continue our goal of educating the public about the importance of shellfish in our bay.

We also will increase our partnership with the Mordecai Land Trust in the creation of a living shoreline by helping to install an oyster castle reef this summer on the western shore of the island. The knowledge that has been gained over the past several years in this partnership is being recognized by many as being at the forefront in the field, and now we are being asked to share that knowledge with other agencies.

As our presence has increased, we’ve found that our budget needs have also. So this year we have embarked on some new, much-needed fundraising initiatives. We have just completed our online “Shellfish Champions” fundraiser, and this Saturday we will have a “funday” at Pinelands Brewery in Tuckerton.

Pinelands Brewery has been gracious enough to allow us to use their facility as another new way to engaged the public. We will serve clam chowder along with oyster stout as we present our education station to the public at the brewery. Also available will be novelty T-shirts and tickets for our kayak/standup paddleboard raffle.

We hope you’ll come on out to Pinelands Brewery this Saturday, April 7, between noon and 5 p.m., enjoy a pint and a bowl, learn about the importance of shellfish in our bay and support ReClam the Bay.

We thank you from the bottom of our bay!
