Register for Stafford Summer Rec Programs This Saturday

Open to Non-Stafford Residents, Too
Apr 26, 2017

Registration begins this Saturday for the 2017 Stafford Recreation Summer Camp programs, open to township residents and nonresidents. Due to extensive renovations at the Ocean Acres School, all programs will take place at the Oxycocus School in Manahawkin.

“We look forward to this new and exciting change and assure all parents that the safe, quality and fun summer camp experiences you and your children have come to know will continue in our new location in 2017,” said Program Supervisor Jason Hazelton.

Stafford Recreation offers camp experiences in four distinct areas – preschool and day camps, field trip camps and specialty camps – to provide a summer of adventure for children of all ages. Offered à la carte with no minimums or maximums, parents can choose as few or as many as they like. But all must register in person and in advance – no drop-ins.

The two registration times are April 29 from noon to 2 p.m. during the Touch a Truck event at Manahawkin Lake Park and Monday, May 15, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Ocean Acres Community Center. Parents are asked to bring a personal check but not to fill it out ahead of time. For the sake of streamlining the process, parents are asked not to bring their kids with them to registration.

Day camp and trip camp are for children ages 5 to 12, in grades K through 6. Day camp is $20 per day; trip camp is priced individually.

Half the total payment is due at the time of registration. There is a 10 percent discount for families registering multiple children with the same address (but not applicable to specialty camps). There is a 10 percent additional fee for out-of-town registrants.

The preschool summer camp program is staffed and directed by state-certified elementary school teachers, who are assisted by summer camp staff. It’s a six-week dropoff program for potty-trained children ages 3 and 4, running Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to noon, from July 5 through Aug. 10, with a limit of 20 children per day. Parents can choose one to four days per week, at a rate of $15 per child per day. Based on a curriculum of weekly themes, preschoolers explore a variety of fun and educational areas of study. Camp days are filled with various activities and components such as reading, music, dance, arts and crafts, kids in the kitchen and, of course, free play.

Day camp for kids in K through 6 runs seven weeks, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from July 5 through Aug. 18, at $20 per day. The program offers games, craft projects, art, sports, free time, a fenced-in playground area, organized activities, special guests and Wacky Wednesday theme days.

Trip Camp also runs for seven weeks from July 5 through Aug. 18, Monday through Friday. Trip times vary from day to day, depending on activity and distance away. Trip camp offers opportunities for campers in grades K through 6 to travel to New York City, go peach picking at Johnson’s Farm, visit water parks, attend baseball games and more. All trips leave on a bus from the Oxycocus School, except for local trips, where parents drop off and pick up at the given location.

Stafford’s themed specialty camps have expanded for 2017 and are staffed by qualified specialists from the various companies, as well as by other professionals, community members and Stafford Rec camp counselors. Themes include “American Girl”; backyard games and Dungeon Ball; bike; cooking; canvas; lacrosse; marine science; multisport; running and fitness; “Sports Squirts”; and youth police academy.
