Remembering Henry, Beach Haven’s Unofficial Mascot

Feb 28, 2018

It’s apparent that Henry was no ordinary canine in Beach Haven. At age 16, the beloved Yorkshire terrier owned by Ron and Pat McMenamin had to be euthanized last weekend, as the pooch was suffering from heart failure.

“He was slowing down,” said Pat McMenamin. “Henry was always a very active dog, but lately he couldn’t move much at all and it was apparent that his time had come.”

When Pat posted about the dog’s passing on Facebook, she couldn’t believe the outpouring of sympathy.

“I must have gotten more than 200 responses, one from as far as Italy,” she said. “That just shows that he meant something to a lot of people. At 16 pounds, he was bigger than your average Yorkie.”

Here’s a sampling of some of the responses:

“I, am so sorry for you and Ron. Henry was an amazing dog. I love thinking about him running around the marina in his little red superhero cape. Thoughts and prayers are with you both,” wrote Tracy Hook Carter.

“He was a really great dog with a fantastic personality. He will be missed by all!” wrote Pat Hough.

“I understand the loss and sadness you must be feeling. All who have had and loved a pet in their lives will understand,” wrote Bonnie Lenhart.

Debby Skipper said “he was a lucky little guy.”

It was almost eight years ago when Henry was attacked by an unleashed pit bull at the Taylor Avenue bay beach, sustaining numerous injuries.

“He had to have his jaw wired,” Pat McMenamin recalled. “We knew he would recover from his physical injuries, but we were worried about the other scars. He was a friendly, fun-loving dog and after that he was a little skittish ”

But she said Henry eventually returned to his normal self, often drawing a crowd walked around the McMenamin home and other areas.

“I’d walk him around the marinas and sometimes people would feed him,” said McMenamin. “I think Henry not only knew the people but the boats, too. He was such a special dog ”

Former Mayor Deborah Whitcraft would agree, saying that Henry was Beach Haven’s “official mascot.”

“I used to see Ron ride the bicycle with Henry in the basket,” she said. “Everywhere Ron and Pat went, you would usually see Henry, too. It’s going to seem strange this summer with Henry not being around the marina and the boats.”
