Reworked Beach Curfew Ordinance Introduced in Beach Haven

Oct 17, 2018

The Beach Haven Borough Council last week reintroduced an ordinance that enacts a 9 p.m. beach curfew for juveniles. An earlier ordinance failed last month when it could not get a second to a motion to adopt it.

The ordinance was proposed several months ago by Councilman Jim White, who had said the measure would be a deterrent for large groups of kids congregating on the beach, a situation that had led to homeowner complaints.

The new ordinance would not affect young people fishing or taking a stroll at night, or if they’re accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

“Furthermore, certain other bonafide educational, civic or community events may be permitted at the discretion of the chief of police,” the ordinance states.

“I think this a less draconian version of the curfew,” said Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis. If adopted, the new curfew would go into effect next June. The borough’s general midnight curfew for juveniles remains intact.

A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for the next meeting, on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. —E.E.
