The judged Standard Flower Show is a key event for The Garden Club of Long Beach Island as it is held only every two years and evaluated by six accredited judges from across the state. “From Sea to Shining Sea” was the evocative theme of the club’s biennial show this year, held earlier this month at the Harvey Cedars Bible Conference Center.

The show conformed to the standards established by the National Garden Clubs Inc. There were two divisions, one in Horticulture and one in Design. The Design Division provided six separate classes for entries; the Horticulture Division contained eight sections.

In Design, club members were inspired to display stunning arrangements showing “Parallel,” “Underwater” and “Cascading” designs, among others.

In the Horticulture Division, houseplants, flowering branches, dish gardens and cut flower specimens showed an array of what our Island has to offer, members noted.

Ribbons were awarded for first, second, third and honorable mention. There were also Special Award Ribbons distributed among the blue-ribbon winners, including: the Award of Horticulture Excellence, the Arboreal Award, Award of Merit, Award of Designer’s Choice and the Tri-Color Award.

Julie Eller, the flower show chairman, and Cindy McGrath, co-chair, along with many members on various committees worked countless hours to make the show the success that it was. —M.S.
