Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve and Stockton University have partnered since 2012 to identify, map and remove lost or abandoned crab traps, or “ghost pots,” from the bay with the help of local watermen and women. The groups also instituted an outreach initiative to increase awareness among boaters, recreational and commercial crabbers, and shore visitors.

Representatives from the JCNERR and Stockton will present a talk – “Rig-It-Right!: Ghost Pot Prevention Efforts” – at Long Beach Township’s Marine Education Field Station.

The LBT Marine Education Field Station, on Osborn Avenue and the bayfront in Holgate, was created just this year, and is housed in a temporary structure until the permanent building is constructed for the 2019 season. In addition to hosting environmental education programs, the space will be utilized for research, meetings, art and history exhibits and classes, and more.

Pre-registration is requested for the ghost pot presentation. For more information or to register, contact Susan at slevance@longbeachtownship.com or 609-361-6683.
