A 19-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed in the AtlantiCare parking lot in Manahawkin on Saturday night shortly before 10 o’clock, according to Stafford Township police. She was sitting in her vehicle, waiting to meet up with friends, when Gilberto Rodriguez, 51, approached her vehicle and opened the driver door, demanded money, and pulled her from her vehicle. The victim fought her attacker, who struck her in the face. Rodriguez stole her cash and fled on foot.

Ptl. Christopher Smith and his K9 partner, Ollie, began to track Rodriguez; meanwhile, Ptl. Giovanni DeMarco observed him (based on the description given by the victim) walking through the nearby parking lot of Spirits Unlimited liquor store, where Smith arrested him.

The victim got her stolen money back. Rodriguez was charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, simple assault and theft and lodged in Ocean County Jail.  —V.F.
