Sarno, Geddes Keep Board Leadership Posts

Jan 30, 2019

For the fifth straight year, Scott Sarno and Robert Geddes maintained their posts as president and vice president of the Barnegat Board of Education, respectively, at a recent reorganization meeting.

Sarno had served on the board for four years before returning to the nine-member group in 2014, while Geddes joined the board the following year.

The three winners in the November election were sworn in to three-year terms on the nine-member board: David Sherman, Lauren Sarno and Michael Hickey. Sherman has served on the board since 2013 and Sarno, wife of Scott Sarno, is a former board president. She previously served from 2008 to 2013 and again in 2016. It was Hickey’s first try at running for public office.

Scott Sarno said the board holds its monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. However, the sessions will be held at rotating sites instead of the high school media center.

“This gives the community a chance to see what other schools are doing,” he said. “The schools can also showcase their achievements. This is something our superintendent (Brian Latwis) wanted to do and we agreed.”

The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 26 at the Joseph Donahue Elementary School. For a meeting schedule, log on to barnegatschools.com and go to “BOE.”

Latwis took over as superintendent in July, and the board president is pleased with his performance.

“I couldn’t ask for a better one,” said Sarno. “I see us working very well with him and his staff. He is also very effective at reaching out to the township committee and police department and wants to keep the community informed.”  —E.E.
