Saturday Slog

Aug 23, 2017

To the Editor:

I am a longtime resident of Brant Beach (45-plus years) and a longtime reader of The SandPaper. This is the first time I have ever written to The SandPaper. Why am I writing now?

This past Saturday, Aug. 12, I encountered something I have witnessed over the years but never personally experienced: traffic leaving the Island on a Saturday at 11 a.m. From my home I have over the years viewed the lines of traffic on Ocean Boulevard, but I never ventured out on any Saturday until the afternoon. This past Saturday I had to venture out to leave the Island to meet friends.

Leaving the Island to get to the bridge, using every back street I have come to know, took well over one hour. All I could think about was these poor renters who visit our Island and have to leave with such a bad taste in their mouths. This “leaving” occurs every Saturday during the rental season.

While on my travels I did see a Ship Bottom police car. I would like to say the officer was directing the traffic, but no, he was just sitting in his police vehicle. Why, I would like to know, cannot the police of Ship Bottom and Long Beach Township direct the traffic on Saturdays, control the traffic lights in such a way as to move the traffic in an orderly manner and make the visitors’ visit one they will remember with pleasure?
