Scallops are jazzy in their own realm, but feature them in a festival, add music, and the party really starts. The Jazzy Scallop & Seafood Festival is a can’t-miss event for the ninth year at Viking Village, Barnegat Light, on Saturday, June 24, from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

Rugged and striking commercial fishing boats that caught the bounty are the backdrop for this treat for ticket-holders under the tent.

Because it’s also a contest among some of the area’s most talented chefs, it’s a win for all who attend. Guests vote for their favorite samples.

Not only scallops, but other varieties of Viking Fresh seafood will be prepared by local restaurants, including: The Arlington and Daymark; Black-Eyed Susans; Inlet Deli; Kubel’s & Kubel’s Too; Mercer County Community College Culinary Arts Program; Mustache Bill’s Diner; Neptune Market; Off the Hook; Spice Catering; and Wally’s.

A raw clam bar is another highlight, and assorted beverages are there for purchase.

The Bansai Bills will perform throughout the afternoon, casting memorable jazz notes to the scene.

Check out the silent auction and participate in the 50/50 raffle.

All proceeds go to The Larson-Puskas Fisheries Education Partnership, which gives scholarships to both Southern Regional High School and The MATES academy to help students pursue their education.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the following locations: Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce, Ship Bottom; How You Brewin?, Surf City and Barnegat Light; Wink, Surf City and Barnegat Light; Viking Fresh Off the Hook, Barnegat Light.

The festival is held on the grounds of Historic Viking Village, 19th Street and Bayview Avenue.  —M.S.
