Jan 18, 2019

Southern Regional students, faculty and staff collected 72,095 non-perishable food items in December for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. It is the 18th year of the district’s food drive.

The Southern Regional Music Department also donated over $1,000, which was collected at concerts. The money is used to buy specific items needed for children.

Southern has donated a total of 423,386 items to the rescue mission over the years. Prior to an assembly that recognizes the donations, members of the mission who come to collect the food items are treated to a holiday dinner made by Southern staff.

On Dec. 18, 20 Southern Regional Middle School FCCLA members traveled to Stafford by the Bay Senior Residence to spread some holiday cheer to residents. The students planned and executed a party with decorations, food, games, crafts and gifts. Students had the opportunity to interact with the residents, getting to know their life stories and holiday traditions.

This tradition is in its seventh year and is continued in honor of the memory of Matt Caufield, the original planner of the event.

On Dec. 19, the Middle School Media Center and the Ocean County Library co-hosted the kickoff event for the Media Makerspace Club. The event featured a chance for students to work with green screen video technology, experiment with invention kits, and try their hands at the art of paper quilling.

Students in a Southern communications class made holiday children’s books for students at the Horbelt School in Barnegat. The books were personalized based on information provided by a fourth grade teacher. The Southern students then presented and read the books they authored to their new fourth grade buddies.
