School News: Spirit of Giving Infuses Southern Projects

Dec 08, 2017

In honor of Veterans Day, the Storm Team at Southern Regional Middle School prepared letters and care packages for Southern Regional alumni deployed overseas. Students then composed letters thanking our military for their dedication and sacrifice for our country.  All of the team teachers helped prepare and ship the letters and care packages to three alumni currently serving overseas.

Middle School physical education students brought in over 800 canned goods for what has become an annual “I Can” workout.

The workout, initiated in 2011, incorporates advocacy with fitness. Seventh and eighth grade students  brought in two cans each, some bringing in even more, to use as their hand weights in a daylong weight training workout.

As of 2017, middle school students and their families have generously donated close to 4,000 canned goods to charity as part of the initiative.

October was Socktober in the Southern Regional School District, during which students donate new socks of all shape, size and color to those who are less fortunate.

Through this fundraiser, students learn that socks are the most needed but least donated article of clothing in homeless shelters. Last October, Southern Regional donated 2,595 pairs of socks. This October, Southern collected a total of 4,066 pairs of socks. They will be given to multiple shelters and families who need them most, including Interfaith Hospitality of Ocean County, Ocean County’s Harbor House, Adelaide’s Place, St. Mary’s Church, St. Francis Church and Fort Dix military base.
