School Roundup: Southern Student, Alumni Take on Carnegie Hall

Southern Regional alumni Tyler Wagner (Class of 2012) and Troy Wagner (Class of 2014) along with junior Griffin Wagner performed at Carnegie Hall with the Atlantic City Pops Orchestra on Feb. 12. The orchestra performed several songs and had an impromptu workshop with writer/conductor Frank Tichelli.

The SRHS jazz bands will present “Java and Jazz” on Sunday, April 15 at 3 p.m. in the 11/12 cafeteria. The price of admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Advance ticketing is recommended.  Ticket order forms can be found at

As a special highlight for this performance, the bands will perform with Michael Philip Mossman and alumnus Jimmy Merchant.

A Southern Regional team placed second at the USPF New Jersey State Powerlifting Championships on March 10 at St. Joseph High School in Hammonton. The team is coached by Southern Regional alum Dylan Larson (Class of 2008).

The athletes in their respective weight classes are: 132, Devin Scucci (1st), Pete Fabian (2nd); 148, Rob Gagliardi (3rd); 165, John Dolphin (1st); 198, Zach Otte (2nd); 220, Joe Miele (1st), Sebastian Cervetto; 242, Mike Levine; 275, Terrick Grace (2nd); SHW, Jayden Smith (3rd); female, Lauren Bakker (2nd).

Southern students scored a handful of awards at the New Jersey Marines Fitness Challenge at Colts Neck High School on March 24.

In the Girls Individual category, Caitlin Hambor and Tiffany Ortner took gold awards and Christina D’Amodio, Emily Furlong and Gianna Antinora captured bronze.

The girls team of Caitlin Hambor, Gianna Antinnora, Emily Furlong, Christina D’Amodia and Tiffany Ortner placed second.

In the Boys Individual category, John Dolphin took bronze.

Southern Regional cheerleading alum Shannon Mathis (Class of 2017) is a member of the Ocean County College cheerleading team that won the 2018 NCA National Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.
