Shop Small Business on Saturday, Nov. 24

The Benefits of Keeping It Local
Nov 14, 2018

Shopping locally is a big deal for an area’s economy. It’s also enjoyable for shoppers since the business community gets together to plan a nice experience. That’s what Shop Small Business Saturday is about. This year that special Saturday is Nov. 24.

The Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce has been the regional champion for the Shop Small movement since American Express launched the campaign in 2010.

“Member businesses have been working with the chamber to cultivate events and utilize activities to build a large stock of unique incentives for consumers to shop the Long Beach Island region each Thanksgiving weekend,” said Lori Pepenella, chamber Destination Marketing Organization CEO. “From open houses and ongoing ‘shop local’ specials throughout the holiday season, it all kicks off on Nov. 24, after the Black Friday shopping frenzy has subsided.”

Shopping locally is a two-way street. When area shoppers buy gift cards for favorite restaurants, shops, lessons or services, it is a fantastic way to give back to local businesses that create employment and donate to local causes.

A list of these specials and events can be found on the website and on social platforms that include @southernoceanchamber and @LBIregion. Or stop into the chamber visitor center at 265 West Ninth St., Ship Bottom, or call 609-494-7211.

A sampling of the Shop Small Business Saturday offers includes in-store retail promotions such as Jetty Flagship Store in Manahawkin; Farias Surf & Sport in Ship Bottom; The Haymarket Toy Store in Ship Bottom; Reynolds Garden Shop in Manahawkin; Ann Coen Gallery in Surf City; Bywatyr Shop in Long Beach Township; Artifacts & Co. in Beach Haven.

Restaurants are also offering day-of specials such as: Creperie de la Mer in Beach Haven – free French press coffee or tea, hot or iced, with the purchase of a sweet or savory crepe; Delaware Avenue Oyster House in Beach Haven Terrace – gift baskets and gift certificate specials.

Enhance your shopping day with events such as the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences’ Holiday Market Festival; The Union Market and Gallery at the Tuckerton Seaport’s Made on Main event; and Santa’s Viking Christmas Village in Barnegat Light.

A wide offering of special events and shows includes a Holiday High Tea at Surflight’s Showplace; the Lizzie Rose Music Room’s Bell Bottom Blues Concert; the Long Beach Island Historical Museum’s Celebrate the Season Open House; and South-End Surf ’N Paddle’s ukulele lessons during the day; and a double- feature screening by the Lighthouse International Film Festival in the evening. See their websites or social media for details.

Shop Small Saturday is just the beginning; contact the chamber to learn more about its Holidays Redefined Shopping Program. Pick up an experience card and enter to win prizes in time for gift giving.

A variety of radio interviews will be aired throughout November and December on WBNJ 91.9FM during the Southern Ocean Chamber's LBI Region Report Radio Show each Monday at 9 a.m.  —M.S.
