Suzy Ciunowicz is a supremely talented seamstress, decorator, teacher, the kind of friend we all wish we were – or better, wish we had. She has been creating and sewing since she was 5 years old, having grown up in a family who made their living in the fashion trade. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology but got her master’s in aerospace engineering, “so I could make a living.”

Six months ago, she and a friend came up with an idea for a retail store on Long Beach Island. Together with Bill Ferinde, she has opened Shore Décor and More in Surf City.

The store is light and airy and welcoming with Bill and Suzy available to give advice. Whimsical and inventive gifts are on display along with water colors by local artists.

Ferinde is a painter extraordinaire. “If you or your child has an idea for their bedroom for example, whether it’s custom striping, color blocking, or novelty painting, or if you want us to design something for you, come in and we’ll definitely have some fun with it,” he said.

Ferinde, a 30-year summer resident of Loveladies, learned the house-painting trade in college. After retiring from the family electronics business five years ago, he moved to Surf City full-time to start his own residential painting business.

Through Ferinde, Shore Décor and More also offers exterior painting and power washing, under the aegis of Shore Décor Painting services.  Ferinde said the key is understanding his customers’ needs. “My customers expect a certain level of finish from the painting services I provide. I make it a priority to go beyond that level of expectation each time.”

What’s not on display in the cozy showroom are the other services available, sail and canvas repairs. Anything can be personalized in the shop.

“We’re so excited to be opening our doors to the public after much preparation. We’ve already been so busy fulfilling custom orders for our wholesale and residential customers, and now we’re ready to unveil our retail offerings to all of Long Beach Island residents and visitors,” said Ciunowicz.

Custom sewing services and design classes are available through Ciunowicz. “We also have creativity and how-to classes where you can learn to sew, paint wine glasses and pillows, or have parties for bridal showers, birthdays, or just because,” Ciunowicz added.

What a great way to spend a rainy day; in fact, rainy day activities for children are available.

Open year-round, but closed Mondays, Ciunowicz is planning craft classes for the fall and winter. Want to get more in touch with local artists? Ciunowicz will be sponsoring gallery nights; want to learn how to personalize totes as gifts? As Ferinde says, “if you have a question, ask Suzy.”

One recent afternoon Ciunowicz was busy crafting delightful gifts for her daughter’s bridesmaids.

Canvas totes with handmade sunflowers along with personalized bathrobes will surely make the purchase of a one-time-wear outfit more palatable.

Shore Décor and More is the perfect place to go when you need a last minute hostess gift; give Suzy a day or two and she will produce something memorable and personal.

The new retail and wholesale business is located at 2400 Long Beach Blvd, Surf City, on the first floor of the building that also houses Bella Donna Salon.

“We’re so excited to be opening our doors to the public after much preparation. We’ve already been so busy fulfilling custom orders for our wholesale and residential customers, and now we’re ready to unveil our retail offerings to all of Long Beach Island residents and visitors,” said Ciunowicz.

Such offerings include window treatment design and installation, shade and blind repair, custom pillows and cushions, custom fabric design, slipcovers, boat cushions and canvas repair, as well as gifts and party favors.
