Side Door Donuts: Bicycle Doughnuts With a Twist

Some things just go together, like pizza and a movie, sea and surf, bicycles and a doughnut. The last is a lot more common than you might think, and it’s easy to come by at Side Door Donuts, a new business just north of downtown Beach Haven, located in the former storage room of Surf Buggy, a bicycle shop.

Since opening Side Door Donuts Memorial Day weekend, owner Brittany Reid has seen the combination of bike riding and doughnut eating any number of ways.

“I like a doughnut before the bike ride for energy,” she said, adding when she thinks of summer, she thinks of doughnuts. “Personally, I just love doughnuts.”

After years of commuting to New York for work, she’s thrilled to bring her love of the sweet morning treat to the community she loves. Wanting to start slowly to ensure the doughnuts were consistently good every day, she decided on nine staple flavors for her sweet creations, and one special flavor that changes daily.

Everything is made fresh daily, onsite and only with natural ingredients. That means on the weekends Reid is at the 1501 Long Beach Blvd. location baking her sweet breakfast treats, and that’s just fine with her.

“I am excited to wake up to it,” Reid said, adding she’s had a lot of support from family and friends, but she’s the solo baker for now. And the idea of using a storage room at Surf Buggy, her husband’s bicycle store for the past 13 years, fits in with her goal of doing what she can with what she has. “I want to have a small (environmental) footprint but still make something that’s delicious.”

It’s not just the doughnuts that are delicious, but the coffee, too. You won’t find a plethora of flavors, but you will find great-tasting coffee and homemade, natural vanilla and chocolate syrup if that’s how you like your java in the morning or afternoon.

“I am focused on the quality of the beans,” she explained of the Colombia fair trade beans she gets from For Five, a micro-roasting facility in Queens, N.Y. It was founded in 2011 by two friends from Queens who wanted to introduce specialty coffee by New Yorkers for New Yorkers.

The For Five offers signature and single-origin coffee with beans sourced from high-altitude regions near the Equator to make sure the beans are from the highest quality crop. The small-batch roasted coffee is served, and sold by the pound at Side Door. So, anyone there for a quick trip can take the coffee home.

In a short period of time, Side Door Donuts has already created a buzz on social media. Nearly every review talks about the made-from-scratch doughnuts using such terms as light, fresh and delicious. Grateful for all the positive feedback, Reid is just happy to have found a home for her passion.

Side Door is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily with extended hours on the weekends in July and August, so if you’re having a midday crash, you can get a pick-me-up until 6 p.m.
