m.t. burton gallery’s fifth annual Summer Art Opener was an amalgam of merry elements. A man in a black vest with blue sequined embroidery and a matching fedora juggled fire. A woman spun plates in the air atop long wooden rods, even handing one off to artist Dawn Simon, who gave the plates a brave twirl. Musicians Allison Stella and Ryan Zimmerman played afternoon into evening before Moondrips, a local jazz trio, brought the event to a close with smooth riffs and melodies. Clams were had, along with fresh produce from Sassafras Hill Farm. Wally’s in Surf City provided a steaming pan of paella. The smells, music and pleasant hum of conversation drifted onto the Boulevard, inviting passersby on a breezy Saturday evening.

Artists were invited to display their work below the cover of white tents in the Surf City art gallery’s spacious sculpture garden, often wandering into one another’s encampment for a chat, wine glasses in hand. Local and out-of-town painters graced the pebble-y stage with their work: Linda Ramsay, Cathleen Engelsen, Lisa Budd, Leslee Ganss, Prax Serrano, John Meegan and Jo Clarke to name a few. Photographer Carol Nussbaum and string artist and photographer Leyna Kmiechick exhibited their colorful portfolios. Illustrator Victoria Ford set out her humorous greeting cards, lively prints and pet portraits.

A delightful display of local talents, the kick-off festivity seemed a success for the Long Beach Island creatives. To see photos from the art opener and to find information on future events, visit m.t. burton gallery’s Facebook page: —S.H.
