Soaring Success

To the Editor:

Wow, it was huge. It was exciting. It was a spectacular family event. The third annual LBI FLY International Kite Festival was bigger and better than the first two LBI Kite Fests combined. Robert Brasington, the top kite maker in the world from Tasmania, said the LBI Kite Fest on Saturday was “the biggest kite festival” he has seen in the U.S. in 25 years.

A giant thank-you goes out to Lisa Willoughby of Surf City who tirelessly works to let everyone see and experience the tremendous happiness and joy this Kite Fest brought to Long Beach Island. We can thank The SandPaper for the great publicity and thank God for the great weekend weather.

In a world full of tragic hurricanes, earthquakes, wars, death, etc., the Kite Fest made everyone smile and be happy. I also thank the kiters for putting on the amazing “Night Fly” at Barnegat Lighthouse. You just have to see this spectacular Night Fly with all the kites individually lit up in the sky flying around the lighthouse.

A special thank-you goes to the borough of Ship Bottom for the digital sign as you enter Long Beach Island announcing the Kite Fest and Long Beach Township for the digital sign announcing the fest at Bayview Park.

A grateful thank-you goes to all the phenomenal kiters, the LBI Chamber of Commerce, the mayors and towns, sponsors, volunteers, businesses, police and public works, and LBI shuttle bus drivers who just kept bringing the thousands and thousands of people all weekend. In addition, I want to thank the hotels and motel operators and private homeowners who donated housing for the kiters who came from all around the world.

I want to thank all of LBI for showing our love to the kiters, who put on what many people said “was the best thing to ever happen on LBI.” I look forward to the 2018 LBI International Kite Fest.

Bill Hutson, Kite Fest volunteer
