By the time the Sunfish Youth World Championship regatta concluded at Brant Beach Yacht Club on Saturday, Aug. 26, the top third of the leaderboard clearly showed which part of the world had established itself as a dominant presence. Unfortunately, those closer to the top weren’t the home sailors from the United States.

While Peru’s Angello Giuria edged Spain’s Ignacio Antequera Erro, the next nine in the standings all hailed from South America. Sailing for Federación Peruana de Vela, Giuria scored 28 points and won by a point over Antequera Erro, after placing first in the first race and grabbing second-place finishes during the fourth and fifth races to remain near the top heading into the final four races.

Giuria held off Antequera Erro, who placed third and first during the seventh and eighth races, when the Spanish sailor finished eighth in the final race. Even though Giuria finished 12th, that result was his lowest mark of the regatta and was tossed from the scoring. A start violation disqualified Antequera Erro in the fourth race, so his eighth-place finish in the last race – his next-lowest finish in any of the nine contested races – stood as part of the scoring, resulting in his finishing with 29 points.

Chile’s Clemente Sequel placed first in the sixth race and second in the seventh race to pull closer toward the front, but he ended up in third overall with 41 points. Peru’s Alejandro Mago was fourth with 42 points, followed by Peru sailor Miranda Paz in fifth with 43 points. Peru’s Adrianna Barron was sixth, followed by Colombia’s Simon Gomez in seventh, Peru’s Santiago Canziani in eighth, and Ecuador’s Ernesto Sarrazin and Michael Andres Velez Soledispa in ninth and 10th, respectively.

After Peru’s Maria Pia Van Oordt and Puerto Rico’s Gustavo Alayon, the highest U.S. finisher was 13th-place finisher Leonora Krajewski of Pine Beach Yacht Club. The only local in the regatta – Brant Beach Yacht Club’s Payton Kliesch – ended up 16th overall after swiping the ninth spot in the final race.

This week, BBYC hosts the open version of the Sunfish World Championships, slated to conclude on Saturday, Sept. 1. More than 50 sailors had entered the competition. —D.B.
