Southern Football Squad Wins Second Straight to Give Donohue Sr. 250th Career Victory

After starting the season with two straight losses, the Southern Regional football team appears to have turned things around. On Sept. 29, the Rams captured their second straight win with a 20-0 shutout of Shore Conference Constitution Division foe Lakewood, giving head coach Chuck Donohue Sr. the 250th victory of his long coaching career.

The Rams opened up the scoring in the second quarter, when J.T. Cornelius caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carmen Deo and Hank Gallacher booted the point-after kick to make it 7-0. Later in the quarter, Deo threw a 17-yard TD strike to Nick Sinatra to make it 13-0 heading into halftime. In the fourth quarter, Rob Gunnell scored on a 40-yard run to seal the victory.

Southern’s defense was solid, forcing four turnovers and limited the Piners to 168 yards of total offense and eight first downs. Colby Saxton led the charge with 10 tackles, including a sack and a forced fumble. Joe Guglielmo tallied seven tackles, while Thomas Barnett and Luke Galan each recorded six. Dupreme Holland and Cole Robinson each snatched interceptions, while Kwamere Holland and Christian Torres each pounced on fumbles.

On offense, Deo finished 4-for-5 with 53 yards, as Sinatra snagged two of those completions for 30 yards. Guglielmo led the running game with 84 yards on 16 carries, while Gunnell carried eight times for 71 yards and Pat Scully added 61 yards on five carries.

Barnegat Football

Cruises to 4-0 Record

The Barnegat football team scored in each quarter during a dominating effort on Sept. 28, as the Bengals cruised past Shore Conference Patriot Division rival Matawan and remained undefeated at 4-0.

After taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Barnegat added another seven to take a 14-3 lead into halftime. Following the break, the Bengals poured on 26 more points, 13 in each quarter to seal the victory.

Quarterback Brian Finucan completed five of nine passes for 143 yards, including a 35-yard TD pass to Caleb Schafer, while senior running back Charlie Cotton ran for 117 yards on 32 carries. Mike Godrey ran the ball 12 times for 71 yards and Schafer added 69 yards on three carries, while senior tight end Sean Morris snagged a pair of passes for 69 yards.

On defense, Godfrey led the way with nine tackles, while Brian Ewan contributed eight tackles and Morris, Robert Armstrong and Anthony Grimes each tallied five tackles. Schafer had a fumble recovery and Dominique Dorphin snatched an interception.

The Bengals will have a big test coming up on Oct. 5 when they host the other undefeated team in the division, Mater Dei Prep (5-0), with the division title up for grabs.

Soar Past Green Dragons

Three days after scoring their lowest team mark in over a year, the Southern Regional gymnastics team rebounded with a vengeance on Sept. 27, tallying its highest output of the season as the Rams springboarded past Shore Conference Class A South rival Brick, 106.1-95.2.

Ava Kelly led the barrage by posting a 35.9 all-around score, registering a 9.2 on the vault, another 9.2 on the balance beam and a 9.5 on the floor exercise. Alex English was third all-around with a 33.3, as she took third on the floor with a 9.35.

Gabby Conforti won the uneven bars with an 8.5, followed by teammate Hailey Klimas with an 8.45, while Conforti swiped second on the beam with an 8.9 and Klimas grabbed second on the floor with a 9.4. Emma Wasacz was solid on the beam as well, taking third with an 8.5.
