The Southern Regional High School football team ran into a buzz saw last Friday night when it hosted Manalapan.

The week before the Braves had won their season opener over Marlboro, 44-0. Now Manalapan is not only 2-0 but still hasn’t been scored on after beating the Rams, 35-0.

The Braves featured a balanced offense, with QB Luke Corcione completing seven of 14 passes for 153 yards including an 85-yard TD connection with Symir Blacknall that opened the scoring. Meanwhile, Manalapan racked up 176 yards on the ground, led by Naim Mayfield, who gained 152 of them on a dozen carries and who crossed the goal line three times from distances of 12, 17 and two yards.

Southern quarterback Sean Distelcamp went three-for-eight for 35 yards. Matt Barnett caught the longest pass, a 22-yarder, and was the most productive runner as well, gaining 54 yards on eight touches.

The loss dropped Southern to 1-2 for the season. The Rams’ next opponent is Toms River East, which has started its season 0-2. The game will be played on Friday night in Toms River, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.  —R.M.
