The Rotary Club of Southern Ocean celebrated its 50th anniversary as a club on June 21 at Element restaurant in Manahawkin. The meeting attracted 70 attendees, including past presidents, community representatives and potential members.

The celebration featured a video with photos honoring the club’s history, the original charter, and awards. A scrapbook of past achievements included the fact that college scholarships have been provided to students.

The club also honored the memory of long-time member John Boekell, who recently passed away.

Also known as the Southern Ocean Rotary Club, the organization meets weekly, and holds its annual Operation Halloween event and many other gatherings throughout the year. The incoming officers for 2018-19 are: president, Cindy Meli; vice president, Janet Nealon; club administrator, the Rev. Rudy Schneider; and treasurer, Judy Barr. Past president is Mark Tobie.
