Southern, Pinelands and Barnegat Football Teams Fall in Regional-Crossover Contests

Nov 15, 2017

In its final game of the season, the Southern Regional football team on Nov. 9 put up a good fight against Atlantic City on the road. Unfortunately, the Vikings (5-4) limited the Rams (3-7) to a few touchdowns while they scored five times en route to a 33-21 victory in an NJSIAA regional-crossover contest.

Joe Guglielmo put Southern on the scoreboard first, running the ball in from 1 yard out in the first quarter. Noah Kanson’s point-after kick made it 7-0, but Atlantic City tied the contest a short time later. In the second quarter, Guglielmo busted into the end zone from 9 yards away, and Kanson’s PAT made it a 14-7 margin. The Vikings scored again prior to the half but the PAT missed, giving the Rams a 14-13 lead at halftime.

Atlantic City scored on a 60-yard punt return in the third quarter to regain the lead, 20-14, and another score on a 32-yard run made it a 13-point advantage before Guglielmo again took the ball to the house, this time on a 40-yard scamper. Kanson’s third PAT made it 27-21 in the fourth quarter, but A.C. scored once more to seal the victory.

Joe Miele led the offense with 171 yards on 14 carries, while Guglielmo finished with 114 yards on 17 carries. Defensively, Miele had eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

Also on Nov. 9, Evan Burton ran for 89 yards on 18 carries and Garrett Brown completed five passes for 57 yards, but it wasn’t enough as Pinelands Regional (2-7) lost a 45-12, regional-crossover game against Oakcrest (2-7). Burton also caught three passes for 29 yards, while Robert Lefevre hauled in a pair of passes for 28 yards. Zach Ackerman carried the ball 10 times for 37 yards to help out on offense. J.D. Harrison led the defensive effort with four tackles.

On Nov. 11, Overbrook (6-3) took a 14-6 lead into the second quarter and never looked back, scoring 35 unanswered points for a 42-6 victory over Barnegat (4-5) in another regional-crossover clash. Charlie Cotton accounted for the Bengals’ only touchdown, running the ball in from 4 yards out in the first quarter to pull Barnegat within a point, 7-6, of the Rams, who initially scored on a 65-yard interception return. Overbrook quarterback Xavier Martin then threw a trio of touchdown passes and rushed for the other two scores, racking up 181 yards through the air and 44 on the ground.
