Southern Regional Boys Soccer Hopes to Build Off Big Turnaround

Sep 08, 2017

After suffering through a 3-12-1 campaign in 2015, the Southern Regional High School boys varsity soccer team brought in a new man at the helm, Guy Lockwood, whose goal was to turn the program around. The Rams improved rather quickly, going 12-8.

“Our team is returning players that accounted for 80 percent of offensive output in 2016, while rebounding from the loss of quality leadership in the defensive end,” said Lockwood. “Adaptation to change in positioning and formation, based on graduation and current talent, will be key in 2017.”

Seniors lost to graduation include goalkeepers Jay Boehle and Griffin Pounds, forward Anthony Delagarza, defensemen Luke Kretschmer and John Loftus, and midfielders Nick Sinopoli and Fernando Tapia.

Heading a group of returning seniors are forward midfielder Joseph Kiernan, who scored 11 goals, and forward Ethan Leming, who scored seven goals and handed seven assists. Other seniors include defensemen Brad Bischoff, Colin McHugh and Sam Iacoves and senior midfielder Joseph Orrico.

Returning players also include junior forward/midfielder Dylan Blauvelt, junior midfielder Nico Wojdyla and sophomore defenseman Ben Hanneman.

Lockwood said newcomers are senior defenseman Aug Guglielmini, junior goalkeeper Braden Dugan, junior forward Cory Galloway, junior midfielder Frank Ritchie, sophomore goalkeeper Cade Johnson, freshman defenseman John Paul Prosperi, freshman midfielder Kevin Kiernan and freshman forward Nico Leonard.

The Rams open the season Thursday, Sept. 7, at home at 4 p.m. against Shore Conference A-South rival Toms River North.

Games against local teams are at Pinelands Regional on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. and Monday, Oct. 23, at 3:45 p.m. at Barnegat High School.

“Last year was looked at as a rebuilding year, but I had hoped we would at least be competitive in our games,” said Lockwood. “Hopefully, we can build from that and have more success this year.” —E.E.
