The road toward another state championship certainly won’t be an easy one for the Southern Regional High School boys volleyball squad, but coach Eric Maxwell’s crew got off to a solid start last week, as the Rams won two straight to open the NJSIAA South Jersey sectional tournament.

Starting off with a 25-14, 25-18 victory over 16th-seeded St. Augustine on May 22, the top-seeded Rams (34-4) received excellent play from Arvind Kumar, who delivered eight kills, four service points including a pair of aces, and two blocks, as well as from Matt Maxwell, who recorded 24 assists, five digs and seven service points, which included an ace. Zack Hem contributed four kills, while Danny Maurus added three kills, and Matt Jones tallied nine digs to go along with a pair of assists.

Two days later, the Rams cruised past ninth-seeded Moorestown, 25-17, 25-18, in the quarterfinals. Hem led the way with eight kills and eight digs, while Kumar hammered down seven kills and mustered three digs, and Shane Bent delivered six kills and three blocks. Maurus scored four kills, four digs and two blocks, and Maxwell gave away 22 assists and managed three digs, as did Mike Andriani.

Southern was scheduled to square off against fifth-seeded Washington Township at home on Wednesday, May 30, with the winner headed to the sectional championship, set for Friday, June 1, to play either second-seeded Kingsway or third-seeded Williamstown.

Southern Tennis Squad
Takes Second in OCT

The Southern boys tennis team is about to wind down a fantastic season, but it wanted to make another statement before doing so. That statement was made on May 26 when the Rams (15-5) placed second in the Ocean County Tournament. Southern totaled 19 points, one ahead of Point Pleasant Beach, while Toms River North players and teams won four of the five finals and swiped the county title with 33 points.

The Rams’ second doubles crew of Burke Flynn and Anthony DelRio was the big point-scorer, as the senior tandem cruised through Barnegat in the first round before knocking off Toms River East, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, in the second round and reaching the final, where they met up with their Shore Conference Class A South rivals from Toms River North.

Flynn and DelRio just missed a first-set win against Shea Bontempo and Ryan Dowds, dropping a 9-7 tiebreaker to lose 6-7, before falling in the second set, 2-6, to finish as the runner-up.

Meanwhile, at first singles, Tommy Franks rolled into the semifinals before being upended and sent to the third-place contest against Central’s J.T. Murray. Franks ultimately finished fourth after losing, 6-3, 6-2.

Barnegat Baseball Team’s
Season Ends

After pulling off a state-tournament upset earlier in the week, the Barnegat baseball team’s season ended on May 24 when the 13th-seeded Bengals fell, 9-1, to Shore Conference Class B South foe Point Pleasant Borough in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II quarterfinals.

The Bengals (9-16) jumped out in front in the top of the first inning when Tyler Suydam delivered an RBI single, but the Panthers rebounded in the bottom of the first to tie the contest at 1-1 before adding three runs in the third and five more in the fifth to seal the victory.

Barnegat managed three more hits the rest of the way – one each by Brian Finucan, Ethan Fox and Lukas Torres – as Borough received a solid, complete-game effort from starter Sam Collins, who walked just one and struck out six Bengals.
