Southern Regional High School Boys Soccer Looks to Mature Quickly

Sep 14, 2018

This year’s Southern Regional High School boys soccer team will be the youngest group of head coach Guy Lockwood’s three-year tenure.

“The team’s ability to mature quickly, learn and apply new tactics at the high school level, and maintain its composure during the speed of play will be key for the team in 2018,” said Lockwood, whose team went 12-8-1 last season.

The Rams started the season at 2-0, with a 3-2 win over Atlantic Tech and 4-0 victory over Manalapan.

“We look to have a balanced attack with a lot of players contributing,” said Lockwood. The team’s Sept. 8 game against Pinelands Regional was postponed due to inclement weather.

Key returning seniors are forward/midfielder Dylan Blauvelt, who had six goals and two assists last year, and senior goalkeeper Braden Dugan, who recorded six shutouts as a junior.

Also returning are senior midfielders Nico Wojdyla and Frank Ritchie, who each scored a goal; senior defender Conor Feeney; junior defender Ben Hanneman; sophomore Kevin Kiernan (four goals, three assists); sophomore forward Nico Leonard (three goals, one assist); and sophomore defender/midfielder John Paul Prosperi).

Newcomers looking for playing time include senior forwards Jose Bonilla Isaguirres and Fernando Pena Medina; senior midfielders Ryan Nugent, Carlos Baltazar, and Jack Hagen; senior defenseman Parker Dugan; senior defenseman/midfielder Sam Skodi; junior midfielders Martin Rojas and Aidan McInerney; sophomore midfielder Nick Budd; and sophomore defenseman Christopher Rizzo.

The Rams’ next home game was Thursday, Sept. 13, against Brick Memorial, at 4 p.m. The Rams then have five straight road contests before returning home to face Lacey High School on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. —E.E.
