Every spring, Southern Regional head volleyball coach Eric Maxwell asks to have his team’s schedule loaded up with many of the best programs in the state because he knows the value of playing tough competition during the regular season. In short, the high-voltage schedule prepares the Rams for just about anything later in the season, when tournament time arrives and they’re playing for hardware to add to the trophy case. The Rams reaped the benefits last week, as they captured their eighth Shore Conference Tournament title.

After cruising past Howell, 2-0, in the quarterfinals on May 11, Southern took the floor at Georgian Court University on May 17 for the semifinals and blew past Shore Conference Class A South rival Jackson Memorial, 2-0, as well. In the championship against a formidable Christian Brothers Academy squad, the Rams dropped the first game of the match before winning the next two for the SCT crown.

The second-seeded Colts definitely didn’t make things easy for top-seeded Southern, jumping out to a 1-0 lead with a 25-21 win in the first game. After the Rams (32-4) bounced back to win the second game, 25-15, the third stint required extra points, as Southern ultimately outlasted CBA, 27-25.

Shane Bent played a big role for the Rams, tallying 14 kills, five blocks and four digs, while Arvind Jumar delivered 11 kills and managed 18 digs, and Matt Jones registered another 15 digs. Matt Maxwell gave away 39 assists and Zack Hem contributed nine kills and a block in the final.

During the Rams’ 25-10, 25-16 rout of Jackson Memorial in the semifinals, Maxwell had a balanced scoresheet with three kills, three blocks, eight digs and 17 assists to go along with five service points. Joe Exel had five blocks, Hem managed six kills, and Jones added 10 digs.

In their 25-20, 25-14 triumph over Howell earlier in the tourney, the Rams were led by Bent, who scored seven kills and a pair of blocks, and Jumar, who tallied eight kills, two blocks, eight digs and seven service points. Maxwell handed out 27 assists to go along with two aces, Hem hammered down six kills and Jones picked up 10 digs.

Of course, the next steps in the quest for additional hardware have arrived in the form of the NJSIAA South Jersey sectional tournament, for which Southern drew the top seed. The Rams opened up with a 25-14, 25-19 victory over 16th-seeded St. Augustine Prep on May 22 and were set to face the winner of the first-round contest between eighth-seeded Cinnaminson and ninth-seeded Moorestown in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 24. The semifinals are slated for Wednesday, May 30.
