Southern Regional Winter Sports Preview

Southern Regional Rams Have Big Shoes to Replace Upfront

Dec 14, 2018

Senior guards Vinnie Deck and Cole Markley will be keys in helping the Southern Regional High School varsity boys basketball team to improve on last season’s 14-13 mark.

“We’re a work in progress,” said head coach Eric Fierro, entering his ninth season with a 119-92 career mark.  “We have senior experience mixed with young talent. A challenging schedule will make for an exciting year.”

Deck is the Rams top returning scorer as he averaged 11.7 point per game in 2017-18. Markley averaged nearly seven points per game. Senior forward Johnny Tilton averaged six points per game.

Other seniors are guard Joseph Infurna and forward Alex Manno.

Also returning are junior guards Matt Godfrey, Will DeVane and Ben Ridgway; junior forward Cole Robinson; and sophomore guard J.P. Ricciardi.

Fierro is also looking for contributions from newcomers, sophomore center Jay Silva and sophomore guard Luke Infurna. Silva is the tallest member of the team, at 6-foot-6.

Seniors from last year’s team who need to be replaced include guard Jake DuBois, forwards Thomas Foster and August Guglielmini and center Alec Tcheveev.

“Foster was our top rebounder and was a force on the boards, and because he and Alec will be missed, we’ve been emphasizing team rebounds in practice,” said Fierro. “One of our strengths is to quickly push the ball up the court after a rebound.”

The Rams open the season at home against Toms River South on Friday, Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m. The Rams’ next game is Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at Toms River East. They return home to face Brick Memorial Thursday, Dec. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

The Rams host the Score at the Shore Tournament with games scheduled Saturday, Dec. 22; Thursday, Dec. 27; Friday, Dec. 29; and Sunday, Dec. 30. Besides Southern, participating teams include Mainland Regional, Middle Township, Howell Township, Lenape Regional, Atlantic County Institute of Technology,  Asbury Park, Wall Township, Mater Dei Prep, St. Mary’s Elizabeth, Pleasantville and Jackson Liberty.

“To go along with our challenging tournament schedule, we will play in three out-of-area showcase games: Seagull Classic at Holy Spirit High School, Shoot Down Cancer Classic at St. Augustine Prep vs. Holy Spirit High School, and the Box Out Cancer Classic at Millville High School against Collingswood,” said Fierro.
