After Southern Regional High School’s Joe Miele captured the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV title as a sophomore, then missed last year’s discus event, the senior obviously had something to prove this year – that being to return to the top of the class and get back to the big stage. On May 25, Miele took the first step toward a return to the Meet of Champions when he captured the sectional crown with a top throw of 160 feet, 4 inches and advanced to this weekend’s Group IV Championships at Franklin High School.

En route to his second section title, Miele outdistanced a pair of Shore Conference Class A South rivals, Toms River North’s Daryn Blackwell (159 feet, 3 inches) and Jackson Memorial’s Andrew McCarthy (157 feet), while Rancocas Valley’s Nickolas Mirabelli took fourth with a throw of 156, 10 inches. In 2016, Miele won the sectional crown with a throw of 165 feet, 1 inch.

While Miele was the only section champ, plenty of local athletes managed top-six finishes in their respective events to move on to the group championship meets, including teammates Joe Guglielmo and David Springstead. Guglielmo placed third in the javelin with a top throw of 164 feet, 9 inches; Springstead also grabbed third by clearing 13 feet in the pole vault.

In the South Jersey Group IV girls meet, sophomore Karagan Bulger was the big scorer for the Rams. Bulger earned a spot in the group meet in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing second in 1:04.97 behind Eastern sophomore Jewel Ash, who won with a time of 1:03.84. Rancocas Valley’s Brianna Snowden was third in 1:05.56. Bulger also grabbed fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.82.

Meanwhile, freshman Maria Mezzo continued to soar in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet to place third, while Lauren Bakker snagged third in the discus with a top throw of 107 feet, 8 inches, and Kari Klimek managed a sixth-place position in the javelin by firing the spear 106 feet.

In the South Jersey Group II meet, the Barnegat girls recorded a solid effort, finishing eighth as a team with 31 points. Senior Kylie Picaro helped lead the way for the Bengals, taking second by matching her school record of 35 feet, 10 inches in the triple jump, while classmate Ginalee Erskine also swiped second in the discus with a top throw of 115 feet, 5 inches. Erskine took fifth in the javelin as well, ending up with a high mark of 102 feet, 6 inches.

Additionally, Sara Wells and Jillian Jankowski each had solid efforts. Wells snatched third in the discus with a top throw of 111 feet, 3 inches and sixth in the shot put with a high mark of 34 feet, 1¼ inches. Jankowski advanced in the very difficult 100-meter dash when she placed sixth in 12.87 seconds and added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 8 inches. Reannah Cooper also grabbed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.28 seconds.

Pinelands Regional sophomore Liz Makar led the Wildcats with a second-place throw of 36 feet, 10½ inches in the shot put, while Susan Grelak took fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 7½ inches, and Jackie Peschko placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:20.62.

In the South Jersey Group II boys meet, the Barnegat 4x100-meter relay of Nico Adorno, Dewight Smight-Fernandez, Ralph Cruz and Justin Gomez combined for a time of 42.95 seconds to take the runner-up spot behind Camden, which finished .53 seconds ahead of the Bengals.

As for other prominent placements for Barnegat, Joe Herod scored points in two events, taking fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 44 feet, 9 inches and fifth in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 10 inches, while Adorno placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.60 seconds. Nick Kovaly finished fourth in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, and Sean Morris grabbed fifth in the shot put with a top mark of 46 feet, 5½ inches.

This weekend’s Group II meet will be at Central Regional High School.
