Southern School Board Approves Building Project Bids

Feb 21, 2018

As part of the school district’s plan to proceed with renovation projects at the high school this summer, the Southern Regional Board of Education approved a pair of bids at its Feb. 14 meeting.

According to district Business Administrator Steve Terhune, the board received six bids for replacing all interior doors of the 9/10 building. Prior to the board’s decision, the lowest two bidders – Garazzo & Scimeca and Ascend Construction – requested their bids be withdrawn due to errors within their submissions. Later, the board approved the bid of $511,217 from Jersey Architectural Door & Supply Inc.

For the scheduled overhaul of the high school auditorium, the district received seven bids and awarded the contract to Duall Building Restoration for a total $2,327,600, which included a base bid of $2,142,000 and two alternate bids of $92,500 and $93,100.

In coordination with approval of the contracts for the two projects, the board authorized the transfer of $727,600 from the Capital Project Reserve Fund to the Capital Projects Fund – appropriating $647,600 toward the auditorium renovation and $80,000 for the door replacements. Projected costs include construction, design fees and contingency costs, and any unused funds will be returned to the reserve fund upon completion of the projects.

On another agenda item, the board approved multiple stipends for athletic coaches for the upcoming spring sports season, which included hiring new varsity softball coach Jamie Bernaldo, replacing Nicole Astegher, who had stepped down from the role several months ago. Bernaldo during the past few seasons was a volunteer assistant at Pinelands Regional, the defending South Jersey Group III champions, and formerly the Wildcats’ freshman coach, before the program scrapped its freshman team.
