Speaker at Beach Haven Library Discusses Hosting Northern Ireland Children

Mar 07, 2018

The Beach Haven Public Library will present a talk by Gretta McHale on Thursday, March 15, at 11 a.m., on hosting children from Northern Ireland.

During the 1980s, she and her husband, Vince, sponsored and hosted youngsters from the war-torn country, whose conflict lasted for nearly 30 years before ending in 1998. The McHales took the children on various excursions, such as Long Beach Island, Great Adventure and the Catskills.

The conflict was marked by political violence, low-intensity armed conflict and political deadlock within the six northeastern counties of Ireland that formed part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It was a complex conflict with multiple armed and political actors. It included an armed insurgency against the state by elements of the Catholic or nationalist population, principally waged by the Provisional Irish Republican Arm (IRA) , though it also included other republican factions, with the aim of creating a united independent Ireland.
