This year’s inductees to the Southern Regional Alumni Association Wall of Fame are Stacey Martin-Adams (Class of 1987), Catherine Buggeln (Class of 1979), Melanie Moore-Magaziner (Class of 1989), Roland “Skip” Martin (Class of 1968), James Raylman (Class of 1968) and Edward Walters Jr. (Class of 1980). The induction ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 27 at the Holiday Inn in Manahawkin.

Eight SRHS student-athletes attended the Ocean County athletic director’s sportsmanship breakfast at Manchester High School on March 29.

Jackman Bush (baseball), Joe Niccoli (volleyball), Brennan Connolly (golf), and Ryan North (track and field), Rachel Heussner (track and field), Alexa Comfort (lacrosse), Allison Lotz (softball) and Jordan Miller (tennis) heard talks on sportsmanship. Representatives from Kessler Sports Institute also discussed rehabilitation of sports injuries.

The Southern Regional Education Foundation has donated two iPads to the middle school self-contained program.  Teachers Michael Benson and Eileen Beirne recently traveled with the program’s students to the Apple Store in Atlantic City for training.

Any student currently in eighth through 11th grade who would like to try out for the high school cheerleading teams for the 2012-13 school year must attend with a parent a mandatory parent/cheerleader meeting on April 17. The meeting will be held in the 9/10 auditorium from 7 to 8 p.m.  Topics of this meeting will include expectations, tryout process and financial obligations.

The Southern Regional High School Air Force Junior ROTC took home top honors in a drill competition on March 17 in Passaic. The cadets competed in both unarmed and armed drill as well as color guard. They were awarded the trophy for best overall in the competition that included ROTC programs from the northeast.

They are now raising funds to attend the National High School Drill Team Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. in May.

The SRHS Health Youth Advisory Council sponsored a “DNT TXT N DRV” (Don’t Test and Drive) day on March 16. Posters and flyers were placed around the school and public service announcements were aired on SNN (Southern News Network) the week of March 12-16. A short video “The Last Text” was shown to all students in homeroom at the beginning of the day.

During lunch periods, 11th- and 12th-grade students were encouraged to sign “don’t drive and text pledges.” All those who signed received thumb bands as a reminder of their pledge.

Senior running/defensive back TJ Bellissimo has been named to the New Jersey Football Coaches Association “Super 100 Team” for the 2011 season. TJ is the 13th player in Southern history to be named to the “Super 100 Team” (begun in the 1995-96 school year). The team is made up of the best 25 players in New Jersey’s four football-playing sections.
