Stafford Library Hosts Blood Drive on Aug. 16

Aug 08, 2018

While summer may mean vacations and family fun at the Jersey Shore, all this activity could also result in more medical emergencies, especially with increased traffic on the roads and people enjoying swimming, boating, sports and other outdoor seasonal pursuits. At this time, the American Red Cross Jersey Shore chapter makes an appeal for blood donations, and a blood donor drive is scheduled at the Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 2 to 7 p.m.

The Red Cross traditionally holds drives late in the summer as it is a likely time supplies run low, when people are engaged in more outdoor activities, and there is a greater possibility of suffering a serious injury.

According to the chapter, prospective blood donors must be in good health, be at least 17 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. Prior to the donation, they will be asked questions about their medical history, and also have temperature, pulse and blood pressure checked.

The actual donation takes between 8 to 10 minutes. When approximately one pint has been collected, a staff person will place a bandage on the donor’s arm. Following the donation, free refreshments will be available.

For an appointment, call the Red Cross at 800-733-2767 or go online at recrossblood.org. Walk-ins are also accepted.

For more information, call the branch at 609-597-3381. —E.E.
