Stafford School News: Field of Flags and Other Honors

The annual Memorial Day ceremony featuring the Field of Flags will once again take place on the grounds of the high school on Friday, May 25 at 10:30 a.m. One 12- by 18-inch American flag will be placed for every service person who has died in Iraq and Afghanistan while serving our country. 

Southern Regional Air Force Junior ROTC cadets, along with the physical education department, will place the flags throughout the day on Thursday, May 24.

Donations to purchase additional flags for this special project are gladly accepted. Checks should be made payable to SRHS-Memorial Day and sent to the attention of Col. Joseph Potts, AFJROTC, 90 Cedar Bridge Road, Manahawkin, N.J. 08050.

Five SRHS students earned silver medals on the National Latin Exam, taken March 15. Fourteen students earned certificates of achievement. 

Silver medal earners were Amanda Graessle, Jesse DeHart, and Stanley Cutts on the Latin I exam, Joshua Haseman on the Latin II exam, and Reagan White on the Latin III exam. 

Earning magna cum laude certificates were Shelbey Swensen on the Latin I exam, David Brennan on the Latin II exam, Olivia Sattan and Kasie Marrella on the Latin III exam, and Kaitlyn McHugh on the Latin IV Prose exam.  

Finally, earning cum laude certificates were Max Steinberg on the Latin II exam, Carrie LaSala on the Latin III exam, and Matteo Mastrogiovanni and Adonis Mellomida on the Latin IV exam.

On March 28, 14 members of the Southern Regional FCCLA chapters from both the middle and high school joined with 600 fellow members for the New Jersey State Leadership Conference. During this two-day conference the New Jersey State Executive Council, led by Southern Regional senior Kelsey Jacobson (president) and sophomore Chelsea Olender (VP of communication), students developed their leadership and career skills. 

Southern Regional was well represented in competitive events that lead to national competition. 

In the middle school, Brenae’ Ervin took first place in Junior – Chapter in Review Portfolio; Katie Hernandez, first place, Junior – Career Investigation; Gianna DeBruyn and Marley Gaskill, first place, Junior – Illustrated Talk.

In the high school, Chelsea Olender took first place, Senior – Career Investigation; Shay’la Duca, first place, Senior – Environmental Ambassador; Rachel Martin, first place, Junior – Chapter Service Project Display.

These seven students have qualified to travel to Atlanta, Ga., this June to compete at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference.

Also winning awards on a state level were: Olivia Aiello, Gianna DeBruyn, Marley Gaskill, Kristina Barnes and Reese Kosinski, Kelsey Jacobson, Alexis Rosko and Arielle Rosko.

Kelsey Jacobson was also awarded the FCCLA scholarship for her leadership and dedication to FCCLA.

Adviser Susan Stinson was awarded the Karen Opyoke Outstanding Advisor Award.

Southern Regional High School Class of 2021 will host a Food Truck Fest on Saturday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the parking lot of the high school. The cost of admission to the event is $3 which includes access to the food trucks and crafts vendors, as well as some children’s activities including games, face painting and a bounce house.

Southern Regional football players Noah Rogers and John Dolphin, both seniors, have been named to the 2017-2018 Shore Conference Football Coaches Association All-Academic team.
