Some may recall from back in the 1980s a specific chewing gum brand that promised to double your pleasure and double your fun. Well, one local travel softball program has doubled its fun and hopes to double its pleasure later this month.

Two summers ago, one Stafford Stingrays softball squad played in the USSSA World Series. This time, a pair of Stingrays teams will be playing in the national tournament, as both the 14-and-under and 16-and-under teams have qualified to play against Class B’s best in Hartford, Conn.

Coached by Steve Lally, Howie Greenblatt and Matt Carmen, the 14U Stingrays used a 12-0 stretch during two tournaments in June to qualify as the top-ranked team in New Jersey, going 6-0 in the Father’s Day Classic June 16-17 and following with another 6-0 effort in the Pride in the Diamond tournament June 23-24. The Stingrays are heading into the national tourney with a 34-1 record for the season.

The 14-and-under squad is made up of players Elisabeth Fitzpatrick, Arden Greenblatt, Giana Carmen, Makayla Alessi, Elizabeth Gosse, Sarah Lally, Annika Asuncion, Julianna Cannizzaro, Toni Marchlewski, Jessica Cheney, Gabriella Giaconia, Julia Pfiefer and Caitlyn Zito.

Earlier in the season – way back during the winter, on Dec. 27, in fact – Mike Sarnoski’s 16-and-under Stingrays qualified for the big dance by winning the Phenom Selekt Christmas Classic with a 13-2 victory over the South Jersey Mystics in the final.

The 16-and-under crew consists of players Chrissy Rinaldi, Carly Sarnoski, Sarah Pampalone, Victoria Cona, Makenzie Torre, Emily Martin, Rachel Gregory, Abby Gunnels, Emily Fitzpatrick, Katie Shives and Gianna Madeiros.

Both the 14- and 16-and-under national tournaments are scheduled for July 23-28.
