Starting a Business? Get Tips From Ocean County Library Website

May 10, 2017

If you’re looking to start a new business or perhaps feel your enterprise needs to go in a new direction, the Ocean County Library has a wealth of resources.

Kate Sanchez, supervising librarian/public relations, said all you have to do is log onto the library system website (theoceancountylibrary.org), and click on “Research & Info” on the bar near the top of the home page. Next, click on “Research” and then click “business” on the “find by topic” column at the far left.

You will then find a list of data bases, and at the top is Business Source Premiere, which provides full text for more than 2,200 business publications. More than 10,100 substantial company profiles from Datamonitor are also included.

The Gale Business Plans is a collection of volumes containing hundreds of actual business plans compiled by, and aimed at, entrepreneurs seeking funding for small businesses in North America. Plans are from businesses in the manufacturing, retail and service industries, with company names and addresses changed. It also includes a business plan template; two fictional business plans; a listing of organizations, agencies, and consultants; a glossary; and an updated bibliography.

The Gale Directory Library helps one find a trade group, a college scholarship, a consultant, a wholesaler and more. Individual entries can be printed, emailed and downloaded and mailing lists created.

Another database is the  Small Business Reference Center, a resource for small-business owners and those interested in starting a business, offering full-text periodicals and reports, sample business plans, U.S. tax forms, videos and reference books. It supports small-business owners in all relevant areas from planning, financing and managing a business to exit strategies. Users also have the ability to search within specific “Business Topics” and “Business Types” relevant to their needs.

Job & Career Accelerator is an easy-to-use online resource for finding the job that’s right for you. It guides you through every step to find a job. Access current detailed job listings from over 5 million job postings that are collected from all major job boards. Create professional resumes and cover letters, master interviewing and networking techniques, and more. Register for a free account or use your Learning Express account.

In addition, the Research and Info section also has a “link to a topic” section, including one on small businesses.

“The Ocean County Library has assisted hundreds of county residents by providing information on starting and managing a small business,” the website says. “We own books, videos, magazines and many brochures that may be borrowed or photocopied. Find helpful titles on start-up, law, financing, advertising and marketing. Especially popular are the Entrepreneur Start-up Guides that focus on specific businesses such as how to start a limousine service, how to run a family hair salon.”
