After 45 years of owning and operating Stohrer’s Manahawkin Shell Service, Bob Stohrer and his wife, Carol, decided to sell their business this past August.

Stohrer feels very fortunate to have had a great following of customers and friends, and certainly appreciates their longtime support over the years.

“We’re very sad to leave our customers, and contractually were not allowed to express this thanks until very recently. I really miss the relationships,” said Stohrer.

“On the other hand, we are very happy to turn over the auto care service business to a very stable, proficient local business that has earned its great reputation.”

Bernie Rothman of SBR Tire Exchange has operated SBR Tire for the past 30 years as a trusted automotive repair, tire and wheel center on Route 9 North in Manahawkin. He will now operate Stohrer’s Shell as an adjunct to his primary location, under the name of SBR Tire Too.

Rothman pledges to offer “the same level of customer service” at the Route 72 shop as the Route 9 SBR Tire original location.

“At SBR, we don’t see our customers one time. We see our customers for generations,” described Rothman. “We’re the personal car care people – we know you, we know your car.”

Family-owned and operated, “our employees are family as well,” he said. “We have many employees who have been with us for 15 years.”

The manager is Lou Buckley, who has a good following from 20 years in customer service and management with Bob Stohrer. Buckley started at Stohrer’s former Goodyear location in Manahawkin, before becoming manager at the Barnegat store for nine years, then manager at Manahawkin Shell for four years.

Patrons will find the gas pump segment of the business to be operated by another family, the Virks, a family with numerous other locations throughout the state. “This is a very nice Pakistani family,” said Stohrer.

Rothman added that the operators of the gas pump and convenience store part of the business run a “tight ship,” keeping the Food Mart well stocked, clean and with good service. “Their goal is to maintain the level of service that Bob Stohrer was well known for,” Rothman said.

“Stop in and visit the Food Mart,” said Stohrer. “I think you’ll be surprised to see the variety of items and the care with which it is operated.”

Besides stopping in person, customers can check out SBR’s website,, for a complete and user-friendly list of services and tires, including pricing and a useful tire size-finding tool.

“Through the years, our dedication to honesty and quality service has helped us maintain a loyal base of customers,” the website sums up. “Our experienced technicians are the pride of SBR Tire Exchange.”

SBR features “the most technologically advanced mounting, balancing and aligning equipment on the planet,” the website tells customers, “along with the qualified technicians who know how to put them to use.”

“Our ASE-certified auto mechanics can handle a variety of automotive repair services like brake repairs, diagnostics, exhaust system repairs, preventive maintenance, steering and suspension system repairs, wheel alignments, and electrical system repairs. We also service hybrid vehicles and Jeeps.”

Noted Rothman this week, “We’re excited to make it more convenient for our customers to have another option and to receive our level of service at another location.

“We now have the Route 72 location for convenience for people going back and forth to the Island. We’ll be able to schedule and manage people’s needs on the main highway,” he remarked, an addition he sees as “dynamite, awesome.”

“Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to have another convenient place for our customers to receive our level of honest service and pricing, and they can trust that this is the type of integrity that is going to be there, just at another location,” Rothman said.

Stohrer sold his two Goodyear stores in mid-2012 in an effort to retire and spend more time with his family. He still operates Stohrer’s Towing, located near SBR Tire on Route 9 North in Manahawkin.

The phone number of the SBR Tire Too at 700 Route 72 is 609-597-6161.
