SUMIS to Present ‘Las Marthas’ in Manahawkin

Jun 12, 2017

Stockton at Manahawkin’s “Movie Monday” summer screening series will continue June 19 with the documentary “Las Marthas,” which follows two Latina teenagers as they prepare for an unusual debutante ball in the border town of Laredo, Texas. The screening will begin at 1:30 p.m.

“In the current climate, different cultures are sometimes demonized, and we’d like to show that’s not always the case,” said Gina Maguire, coordinator of “Movie Monday” and other programs at the Stockton Center on Successful Aging.

Directed by Cristina Ibarra, “Las Marthas” goes behind the scenes of the annual Society of Martha Washington Colonial Pageant and Ball, whose participants don Colonial-era gowns to portray early American women. The event is part of Laredo’s month-long celebration of George Washington’s birthday.

Maguire, who leads a discussion following each “Movie Monday” screening, kicked off the series last month with the documentary “Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric,” which examined the complexities of gender identity.

The July screening will be “The New Black,” which chronicles the African-American community’s response to the campaign to legalize gay marriage, and the August screening will be “Limited Partnership,” which focuses on Richard Adams and Tony Sullivan, who filed the first federal lawsuit seeking equal treatment for same-sex marriage in the United States.

Although “Movie Monday” was conceived as a summer series, Maguire reports that it might become a year-round offering if a suitable space can be found off site. “Our programing at SCOSA caters to a wide range of older adults with a wide array of interests, and our Manahawkin center is very active,” she said, noting that the current screening space can seat about 35 people. “We’d love to continue ‘Movie Monday’ past the summer; it’s just a matter of finding the space.”

Admission to “Movie Monday” screenings is free, but registration is required. To register, call 609-626-3883.  —R.K.B.
