Nearly 7½ years after opening the McKinley Convenience Store in Manahawkin, Shashi and Shital Mistry have established Suzy’s Convenience Store and Deli at 455 B Main St. (Route 9). The store, which opened Nov. 3, gets its name from Shital’s nickname.

At Suzy’s, the inventory is not much different than at McKinley, as customers can find cigarettes, coffee, newspapers, candy, snacks, groceries, dairy products, soda and more.

“But here we have more space,” said Shashi. “McKinley has around 1,500 square feet, but here it’s 2,000 square feet, so there’s room to offer more to shoppers.”

The main difference between the businesses is that Suzy’s does not yet have Lottery sales.

“We’ll probably have that in the next month,” said Mistry. “Soon, we’re going to offer breakfast sandwiches.”

He said he also wants put in a flat-screen TV.

“I have a couple tables, so people can have coffee, a sandwich and watch the news,”  he said.

Their foray into the convenience store business grew out of when they lost their jobs at a dental product manufacturing company.

“They were downsizing,” he said. “We had some retail experience. Shital worked at a 7-Eleven, and in India, I worked in a furniture store.”

He said that when looking for an available spot, they checked out what was then known as the Hawkin Deli, located at the east end of the McKinley Plaza.

“But the store’s layout wasn’t going to work, especially with the kitchen in the back,” he said.

However, another location in the mini mall that was available was a vacant Citi Financial Bank.

“That place had a layout that would work for us,” he said.

He said that like McKinley, he wanted to find a place that was convenient for walking.

“There’s a big apartment complex next to us,” he said. “I’m hoping we’ll get a lot of customers from there.”

Hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Telephone is 609-622-8251.
