Tanks for the Memories

Aug 01, 2018

To the Editor:

My wife recently bought me a copy of Long Beach Island Chronicles. I found the book fascinating with its pictures and recollections from years past, many of which my personal experiences pre-date.

In 1950 and 1951 I worked during the summers (I was a college student) for a propane gas company with offices in Hammonton. I would usually make two trips a week to LBI to deliver tanks of propane gas to residential and commercial customers. The tanks weighed 200 pounds full, 100 pounds empty.

I remember struggling to drag full tanks across the sand to houses on the beach, using balloon-tired hand trucks, fighting off greenhead flies the size of my truck. I can recall two commercial customers to which I made two deliveries a week: the Harvey Cedars Bible Conference and Wida’s Hotel and Restaurant (now daddy O).

I vacationed with my family on LBI in the ’60s and ’70s and I purchased my present home in Loveladies in 1986. My fond memories of LBI extend back more than 60 years.
