The SandPaper Recognized for ‘General Excellence’

May 02, 2018

The SandPaper scored a rare double victory on Thursday evening at the New Jersey Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest Awards Dinner. The newspaper won 2017 “General Excellence” awards in both the editorial and advertising contests.

The General Excellence Editorial Awards are determined by adding up points in both the editorial and photography competitions, with a first place in each of the many categories earning three points, second place two and third place one. SandPaper reporters and editors racked up 26 awards in the 2017 competition, including seven firsts. Meanwhile, SandPaper photojournalists nailed down 15 awards, three of which were of the gold variety.

The General Excellence Advertising Awards are determined in the same add-up-the-points manner. The SandPaper advertising department proved as strong as editorial and photography, garnering 34 total awards including 14 first-place honors. It is the sixth straight year The SandPaper has won General Excellence in advertising.

This year’s Better Newspaper Contest was judged by members of the North Carolina Press Association.

The editorial contest is actually four contests, determined by circulation. Dailies fight it out in two groups – over 20,000 and under 20,000 – while the weekly groupings are over 6,500 (The SandPaper’s category) and under 6,500. The advertising contest is split into two groups, daily and weekly.

Winning both Editorial and Advertising General Excellence Awards in the daily competitions is common. But that isn’t the case when it comes to weeklies. This is only the second time a weekly newspaper has grabbed both crowns since the turn of the millennium. —R.M.
