Too Little, Too Late

Aug 23, 2017

To the Editor:

Does anyone believe that President Trump will lose the support of the KKK, neo-Nazis and white supremacists now that he has so “forcefully” renounced them?

My sense is that he won’t because they all know he really didn’t mean it. His advisers carefully crafted his Aug. 14 statement and urged him to do the politically correct thing. Too little, too late and insincere.

Well-intentioned conservatives and Republicans who still support Trump need to understand his real “base” is supported by this foundation of ignorance and intolerance. The base is rotten to its core with a cancer, and we hope it will give way to more rational supporters.

Upon reflection, I can’t completely blame Trump for the emergence from the shadows of these hate groups. After all, Americans had the “audacity” to elect a black man twice and put him in their White House. So, the bottom line is it’s Obama’s fault. Isn’t that what his supporters want to hear?
