Trident Fitness & Performance to Host Concussion Seminar on Sept. 18

Sep 11, 2017

With concussion incidents on the rise in several sports, along with the increasing amount of data detailing the potential long-term effects of multiple brain injuries, it’s important for parents and coaches of young athletes to have a good understanding of what a concussion is, its symptoms, proper treatment options and the recovery process. Parents and coaches can learn the answers to these topics and more when Trident Fitness & Performance, located at 541 Route 9, West Creek – next to Eagleswood Elementary School – hosts a concussion seminar on Monday, Sept. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

NovaCare and Brielle Orthopedics have partnered with Trident for the free program and will have a 15-minute question-and-answer session at 7:45 p.m. Registration is not required.

“Our goal is to arm parents and coaches with as much information as possible when dealing with concussions,” said Trident’s Adrienne Donofrio, whose oldest son’s sports career was ended after he sustained several concussions. “Second impacts can be life-threatening, and the residual effect can be permanent.

“My son’s injuries happened more than 14 years ago, and at the time we really had no clue how dangerous it was or what to do moving forward. I had to seek out information on my own because concussion drew such little attention and not much information existed. I still recall how lost I was at the time. We are hoping to provide this information so parents and coaches can avoid tragedy.”

Dr. Thomas Sargent of Brielle Orthopedics and physical therapist Kaley Heck of NovaCare Rehabilitation will present the program. Sargent, a sports medicine and non-operative musculoskeletal care specialist, is a family physician and member of the American Board of Family Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine and the American Osteopathic Association.

Heck is a licensed physical therapist and certified athletic trainer with more than 12 years of experience. She is the practice manager at NovaCare in Galloway.

Sargent will discuss the medical community’s treatment of concussions, sideline assessment, return-to-play directions and prevention. Heck will discuss the role of an athletic trainer and physical therapist in the treatment and recovery of a concussion.
