Troubling Link

Dec 20, 2017

To the Editor:

The possible elimination of the state and local tax deduction is concerning for New Jersey taxpayers, but there’s another troubling proposal in the tax reform package that is getting little play in the press. It’s the opening up of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for oil drilling.

While tax reform is sorely needed, linking it to a controversial measure like ANWR drilling simply does not make sense, especially considering it could end up adding to the deficit. Proponents say it would generate $1 billion to offset the tax cuts, but data from previous leases indicate it would actually yield less than 20 percent of that. Add in the permanent disruption it would cause to the nation’s most wild and pristine places, it’s clear the costs far outweigh any benefit.

Rep. Frank LoBiondo has signed on to a letter urging his colleagues to omit ANWR drilling from the final tax reform package. I applaud him for this effort and encourage him to continue to speak out against it as the debate continues.
