The Tuckerton Borough Council has awarded a contract to replace bulkheads in South Green Street Park to KG Marine of Manahawkin. The $1,297,065 contract includes constructing a fishing pier from about the center of the park that will extend 50 feet into Tuckerton Bay.

Councilman John Schwartz said plans to revamp the park also include new playground equipment, pavilions and a restroom trailer that can be unhooked from the water supply, “So when a storm hits, we can get it out of there.”

The park at the bayfront was created in the 1960s, using marine lumber soaked in creosote. The new bulkhead will be made of environmentally safe plastic sheathing.

Later Monday evening, after the July 3 council meeting, South Green Street Park was crowded with fishermen, hikers and bicyclists – folks just enjoying the bay breeze.

Ellis Donnelly from Little Egg Harbor and his 7-year-old son, Ellis Jr., were fishing while Donnelly’s wife, Joanna, and daughter, Jackie, sat and watched.

“I think revitalizing the park would be incredible, especially the fishing pier,” he said.

His son had caught his first bluefish the week before and they were a decent size but they threw them back. “Too oily, but fun to catch.”

Elsewhere, two guys from Trenton had come to fish for sharks in the glooming light. One showed a photo of a brown shark he said he had caught right off the bulkhead. They don’t keep the sharks; they release them after catching. They remarked that they come to the spot often. They hope the restructuring of the bulkhead doesn’t disturb their favorite spot.

Pat and Steve from Barnegat said they had only discovered the park the day before. They came back Monday to enjoy the breeze and have a glass of wine while watching the sun go down. They said they liked the park fine the way it was but if it was going to be improved, that is fine, too.
